Onoe Hanging Drying Net 40The Three-Tier Net We Use for Drying Vegetables

The Onoe drying net with mushrooms inside, hung by a window

This is a three-tier drying net (hoshikago) by Onoe, a Japanese maker of outdoor and kitchen goods. We bought it for drying vegetables. It also works for drying dishes after camping or a barbecue.

It’s sold mainly in Japan. Outside Japan, similar multi-tier hanging mesh dryers are widely available, often sold for drying herbs or fish.

What we like

The package of the Onoe drying net 40
  • Roomy shelves: At 40 × 40 cm (16 × 16 in), there’s plenty of room to spread vegetables out.
  • Wide opening: The zipper opens in a U shape, so laying vegetables out and turning them over is easy.
  • Passed Japan’s food sanitation tests: Reassuring for something that holds food.
  • Keeps out bugs and dust: The mesh is fine and closes with a zipper.
Vegetables and mushrooms partway through drying, laid out inside the net

What could be better

The Onoe drying net folded flat

It folds flat when not in use. But compared with the outdoor brand’s Coleman Hanging Dry Net, the Coleman folds smaller.

  • It hangs, so it swings a lot on windy days. A spot that isn’t in the full wind, such as by a window or inside a balcony, is safer.
